Almendres (Évora)

The Almendres megalithic enclosure is the largest megalithic monument in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the oldest of Humanity’s monuments.  It was, as it seems, built around 7ooo years ago, at the dawn of the Neolithic, the time when the first communities of shepherds and farmers were emerging in Europe. The Almendres site, whose [...]

Zambujeiro (Évora)

Dolmens are collective funeral monuments that correspond, generally, to the second phase of regional megalithism; they were built for the most part at the end of the Neolithic, less than six thousand years ago. The funeral megalithic monuments that came before dolmens were formally similar although smaller in size and without a corridor and corresponded [...]

Ebora Megalithica

Évora was founded by the Romans in the time of Emperor Augustus. This period is distinguished, in the highest point of the city, by the ruins of the Roman temple.

But Evora is also the center of one of the greatest megalithic regions of pre-historic Europe. The Megalithic monuments from Alentejo were erected in the Neolithic (6000-3000 BC), by the oldest communities of farmers and shepherds in the region.

Today, they profile themselves, indelible, as messages from other times in the stillness of the plain.

Ebora Megalithica is a project of public archaeology. We aim to promote the megaliths of Alentejo as part of a wider cultural framework. We intend to create cultural products based on scientific knowledge, art and communication.
